Discourse on the Ghost Festival
August 31st, 2012
今日是中国农历七月十五 ，鬼节。
Today is July 15th of Chinese Lunar Calendar, the Ghost
Festival.
鬼节，顾名思义，即鬼过的节日。鬼节在中国有四大鬼节，分别是清明节，三月三，七月十五(十四），十月初一 。
Ghost Festival, as the name suggests, the festival that ghosts celebrate.
There are four ghost festivals in China, which are Tomb-Sweeping Day, March 3rd,
July 15th or 14th and October 1st. (all in
lunar calendar)
七月十五中元节又称“七月节"或盂兰盆会"。中元节是道教的说法，"中元"之名起于北魏，有些地方俗称"鬼节"、"施孤"，又称亡人节、七月半。
July 15th, mid-yuan
festival, is also called July Festival or Ullambana. The mid-yuan festival is a Taoism term. The name
of mid-yuan dated
from North Wei Dynasty and in some places it is commonly known as Ghost
Festival, the festival when Alms are given to lonely ghost, the festival of the
deceased or the Mid-July.
佛教传入后，佛教徒根据印度一种佛教仪式追荐祖先，佛教也在这一天，举行超渡法会，称为"屋兰玛纳"（印度话ULLAMBANA）也就是"孟兰会"。孟兰盆的意义是倒悬，人生的痛苦有如倒挂在树头上的蝙蝠，悬挂著、苦不堪言。为了使众生免於倒悬之苦，便需要诵经，布绝食物给孤魂野鬼。此举正好和中国的鬼月祭拜不谋而合，因而中元节和孟兰会便同时流传下来。
After Buddhism was
introduced into China, Buddhists pray for their ancestors according to an
Indian Buddhism ceremony and the salvation assembly will also be hold on this
day, which is called Ullambana(Hindi word), also called Yu Lan Assembly. The
meaning of Yu Lan Basin is to hang upside down. The afflictions of life are like
a bat hung upside down in the tree, so painful that they are beyond any word.
In order to make living beings avoid those overhang pains, it is necessary to
chant sutras and offer food to the wandering ghosts and lonely spirits. This
approach coincides with the Chinese worship in ghost month, so both the
mid-yuan festival and the Ullambana have come down from the old times.
根据中国民间传说，每年从七月一日起 阎王就下令大开地狱之门，让那些终年受苦受难禁锢在地狱的冤魂厉鬼走出地狱，获得短期的游荡，享受人间血食，所以人们称七月为鬼月，这个月人们认为是不吉的月份，既不嫁娶，也不搬家。七月十四日 则鬼门大开。
According to Chinese folklore, the king of Hell orders opens the Hell
Gates on every July 1st and let those evil ghosts and spirits, who
have been immured and suffered there all the year round, go outside the hell to
get a short-term wandering and enjoy the sacrifice food in human world. Therefore,
people call July the ghost month and believe it is an unlucky month when
neither marriage nor family-moving will take place. On July 14th,
gates of Hell will be widely opened.
道教有所谓天官、地官、水官，合称三官，这三位是玉帝派驻人间的代表，每年都要考察人间的善恶，向上天汇报。三官分别以正月十五、七月十五、十月十五为诞辰，这三个日子也叫三元。
There are so-called Heaven Official, Earth Official and Water Official,
and in general they are called Three Officials, who are the representatives
accredited to the human world by the Jade Emperor. They inspect people’s good
and evil deeds and report back to the Heaven every year. The birthdays of these
Three Officials are January 15th, July 15th, October 15th
of the lunar calendar respectively, and these three days are also called Three Yuan.
中元鬼节七月十五日 ，叫中元，正值地官校籍赦罪之时，这一天，他要拿出厚厚的花名册，根据神仙、凡人、动物们的表现，勾勾画画，赦罪免刑。民间在中元节这一天搞一些祭祀活动，拯救那些孤魂野鬼，祈求地官赦罪。
The mid-yuan ghost festival,
July 15th, is called the middle yuan when the Earth official collates
the good-evil account in thick rosters and remits some souls from punishment
based on their performance and these souls may be immortals, ordinary humans or
animals. Folk sacrifices activities will be hold on this day to rescue those
wandering ghosts and lonely spirits and pray the Earth official for pardon.
佛教盂兰盆节起源于"目莲救母"的故事。佛陀弟子中，神通第一的目犍莲尊者，惦念过世的母亲，他用神通看到其母因在世时的贪念业报，死後堕落在的恶鬼道，过著吃不饱的生活。目犍莲於是用他的神力化成食物，送给他的母亲，但其母不改贪念，见到食物到来，深怕其他恶鬼抢食，贪念一起食物到她口中立即化成火炭，无法下咽。目犍莲虽有神通，身为人子，却救不了其母，十分痛苦，请教佛陀如何是好。佛陀说："七月十五日 是结夏安居修行的最後一日，法善充满，在这一天，盆罗百味，供巷僧众，功德无量，可以凭此慈悲心，救渡其亡母。” 目犍莲遵佛旨意，于七月十五用盂兰盆盛珍果素斋供奉其母，其母亲终得食物。
Buddhist Ullambana Festival originated from the story of Maudgalyayana
rescuing his mother. Maudgalyayana, one of the Buddha’s disciples, who is
endowed with No.1 supernatural power, missed his departed mother. So with his
theurgy, he saw his mother living a starving life in the hungry ghost realm as the
karmic retribution of her greed when she was alive. Using his miraculous power,
Maudgalyayana provided a bowl of rice to his mother. However, his mother couldn’t
change her greedy thought, seeing the coming food, she was afraid that other
hungry ghosts would plunder it. When this greedy thought occurred, the food was
turned into charcoal immediately as it reached her mouth and became uneatable. As
a son, although Maudgalyayana had the supernatural power, he could not rescue
his mother. Therefore he became very sad and consulted the Buddha about how to
save his mother. Buddha said, “The
fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month every year is the last day of summer
retreat for all monks and all of them are full of Dharma Joy. If you make
elaborate offerings for all holy monks on this day, unlimited merits will be
accumulated and you can rely on this compassionate mind to release your mother from
the woeful state.” Maudgalyayana followed Buddha’s
instruction and offered fruit and vegetarian meals to monks on July 15th and
his mother finally got the food.
师父很久没有给大家开示了。
几年来已经给大家讲得太多太多。
Osifu has not expounded discourses for everyone for a long time.
In recent years, discourses are more than enough for you.
今晚走在路上，看到浉河边、臭水沟边、路边、十字路口，到处都是烧纸钱的。不由心生怜悯，口中念起“南无幽冥教主地藏王菩萨......”
心中流露出阵阵哀痛....
说，难以唤醒痴顽；
不说，心中实则难忍。
Tonight walking on the road, seeing people burning paper money as
sacrificial offerings at the side of Shi River, the side of sewage ditch,
roadside and crossroad, Osifu couldn’t help feeling a sense of compassion in the
mind and recited “Namo Nether Hierarch Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva……”
The heart revealed gusts of grief…..
If discourse is expounded, it is hard to awaken the stubborn and
ignorant;
If no discourse, it is grievous in the heart indeed.
今天是鬼节，师父也要为度鬼佛事尽心尽力。
Today is Ghost Festival, Osifu would spare no effort in the Buddhism practice
of rescuing ghost as well.
刚才在路上，看到很多人给故亡的亲人家人烧纸钱。师父想到全国各地有数以亿计的人在烧纸钱祭祀祖先，不由慨叹了一声“与其这样，不如大家一起念‘南无阿弥陀佛’回向给列祖列宗、故亡的亲人家人。
Just a while ago when walking on the road, Osifu saw many people burning paper
money for their departed relatives and families. It occurred to me that there were
hundreds of millions of people burning paper money to worship their ancestors.
Such thought made Osifu sigh with regret involuntarily: they would rather
recite “Namo Amitabha” together and
transfer the merits to the ancestors and deceased relatives and families than
burn paper money for them.
值此末法时期，善男子善女人若想发心度亡度鬼，没有比一心称念“南无阿弥陀佛”更好更有效的方式方法了。
当然若能加持楞严咒其功效威神更是不可思议！
In this Dharma-decline age, if any virtuous man and virtuous woman would
like to rescue departed spirits, there will be no better nor more effective way
than chanting “Namo Amitabha” single-mindedly.
Of course, its merits and efficacy would be even more incredible if we add
upholding Shurangama Mantra.
“南无阿弥陀佛”六字洪名是药、是甘露、是神咒、是大总持、是无量密、是密中密、是心中心、是正法、是大道、是航向、是灯塔、是超级能量。
‘Namo Amitabha’ is medicine, sweet dew, miraculous mantra, Dharani,
infinite esotericism, secret-in-secret, mind-in-mind, proper dharma, Great Way,
the heading course, lighthouse and super energy.
善男子、善女人在断恶修善的基础上，以清净心一心称念“南无阿弥陀佛”六字洪名是吃药、是饮甘露、是持神咒......是接受超级能量加持。
Virtuous men and virtuous women single-mindedly reciting “Namo Amitabha” with
pure mind on the basis of evil-refraining and good-cultivating is taking
medicine, drinking sweet dew, upholding miraculous mantra… receiving the
blessing of super energy.
谈到能量加持，师父不由得想起了很多修行人在能量加持方面的误区。
Speaking of the energy blessing, Osifu cannot help thinking of the
mistaken ideas that many cultivators have.
误区一：认为有感应即是佛菩萨能量加持。殊不知正能量负能量都会让修行人产生各种感应，诸如麻、胀、冷、热、蚁爬感、晕、心跳加速、看到光团、显像、声音、香味等。不可以一有感应就认为是佛菩萨加持、是能量场好。不执著、不动心就不会出问题。
Mistaken view 1: It is believed that having physical response is to have
the energy blessing from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. It is hardly realized that
both positive energy and negative energy can make cultivators generate all
kinds of response, such as the sense of numbness, swell, cold, hot, ants crawling,
giddiness and heart rate speeding-up, seeing light mass and images, hearing
sounds, smelling fragrance, etc. It should not be thought that when one gets
somewhat response, one believes that it is the blessing from Buddhas and
Bodhisattvas and one is in a good energy field. Only with no attachment and
unmovedness could no problem arise.
误区二：认为能量高的人就是层次高的人。在一定维次内，正邪都有高能量生灵，佛和魔都是高能量。
Mistaken view 2: It is believed that the person with high energy is the
one in high level. In a certain dimension, there are both good beings with high
energy and evil beings with high energy. Both Buddha and Demon are high energy.
误区三：认为能量高的场就是好的能量场。在一定维次内，正邪都有高能量场，佛有灵山、祇园，魔也有魔窟。
Mistaken view 3: It is believed that the field with high energy is the
good field. In a certain dimension, both good forces and evil ones have high
energy field. Buddha has the Vulture Peak and Jetnava Vihara while Demon has demonic
den.
误区四：认为灵感强、感应强的人就是修得好层次高的人。师父常说：心有多净层次就有多高。决定生灵层次高低至少有五要素：正能量、智慧、功德、法力、修为，缺一不可。
Mistaken view 4: It is believed that the person with strong response is
the well-cultivated and high level one. Osifu often says: The level is up to
the pureness of the mind. There are at least five determinants of the beings’ level:
positive energy, wisdom, merits, supernatural power and cultivation, and all of
them are indispensible.
误区五：认为能量是求来的。不懂得无所求而自得，不懂得功到自然成，不懂得有舍有得，不懂得一切皆有因缘，不懂得一切是心的感召。
Mistaken view 5: It is believed that energy is obtained by pursuing. They
don’t know that one gains naturally without any pursuing. They don’t know that
success comes after enough efforts. They don’t know that the hand that gives
gathers. They don’t know that everything has its causes and conditions. They
don’t know that everything is called forth by heart.
误区六：认为能量是贪功求进、拼命练功炼来的。殊不知欲速则不达，贪求心过重，反而容易出大问题。
Mistaken view 6: It is believed that energy is obtained by coveting quick
success and desperate hardworking. It is hardly realized that fool’s haste is
no speed. Excessive covetousness will lead to big mistake instead.
误区七：认为能量是私有的。殊不知能量属于众生、融于宇宙、顺于自然、同于规律。一念私心起，能量散泄遗。
Mistaken view 7: It is believed that energy is private. It is hardly
realized that energy belongs to all living beings, which is diffused in the
universe, accords with nature and conforms to the rules. Once a thought of
self-interest arises, energy will be scattered, leaked and lost.
误区八：认为能量是有限有形的。殊不知能量是无限无形的。
Mistaken view 8: It is believed that energy is limited and tangible. It
is hardly realized that energy is unlimited and intangible.
误区九：认为能量是可以支配的、可以人为控制的。殊不知能量是顺应宇宙规律、自然法则、合道运行的。
Mistaken view 9: It is believed that energy can be dominated and
controlled by man. It is hardly realized that energy is running according to cosmic
principles, natural rules and the Way.
误区十：认为能量是宇宙的一部分，而不是全部。殊不知，一切皆是能量。师父所说的宇宙能量、宇宙信息、宇宙密码本来一体，只是从不同角度、范畴解说分开阐述的，三者是一体的。
Mistaken view 9: It is believed that energy is a part of the universe,
not the entireness. It is hardly realized that everything is energy. Cosmic
energy, cosmic information, cosmic codes that are expounded by Osifu are
originally oneness, which are stated separately in different angles, different categories.
The three are oneness.
对于修心修行修炼人对宇宙能量的认识思维误区简言其十，希望大家确立正确的认识思维，不要走向误区。
The mistaken views of people engaging in mind discipline, cultivation and
practice are listed ten points briefly, and hope
everyone can establish right thoughts and not be misled.
刚刚在谈度亡度鬼，现在又重点谈能量，是不是跑题了呢？不是！
Just a moment ago we were talking about rescuing the departed souls and
ghosts, now focusing on energy topic. Is it straying from the subject? No.
师父常说：一切皆是能量。
Osifu often says: Everything is energy.
神佛仙圣真是能量化现；
Deities, Buddhas, Immortals, Saints and Allah are the manifestation of
energy.
天龙八部是能量化现；
The eight fold divisions are the manifestation of energy.
宇宙星河是能量化现；
Universe and Galaxies are the manifestation of energy.
山河大地是能量化现；
Mountains and Rivers as well as Ground are the manifestation of energy.
一草一木是能量化现；
Each grass and each wood is the manifestation of energy.
一沙一土是能量化现；
Sand and dust is the manifestation of energy.
一呼一吸是能量化现；
Exhalement and inhalement are the manifestation of energy.
星汉灿烂是能量化现；
Milky Way resplending is the manifestation of energy.
日月经天是能量化现；
The sun and moon running across the sky are the manifestation of energy.
江河行地是能量化现；
The river flowing on the ground is the manifestation of energy.
新陈代谢是能量化现；
The metabolism is the manifestation of energy.
裂变聚变是能量化现；
The fission and fusion are the manifestation of energy.
度亡度鬼是能量化现；
Rescuing the departed and saving ghosts are the manifestation of energy.
超拔救度是能量化现；
Salvation and relieving are the manifestation of energy.
十方佛刹是能量化现；
The Buddhas’ kingdoms in ten directions are the manifestation of energy.
三世诸佛是能量化现；
The Buddhas of all times are the manifestation of energy.
师父常说：对于修心修行修炼人来说，智慧能量犹如鸟之双翼、车之双轮。缺一便不可提升！
Osifu often says: Wisdom and energy is like the two wings of bird, the double
wheels of carriage for people engaged in mind discipline, cultivation and
practice. Ascension is impossible if one of them is dispensable.
师父常说：最大的智慧就是不动心！
Osifu often says: The greatest wisdom is unmovedness.
师父常说：动心能量就会散、泄、遗。
Osifu often says: Having your mind moved will cause energy to scatter,
leak and lose.
师父常说：心正、心善、心诚、心净、心空、心无我、心无欲、心无为、心无求、心无争，能量就会源源不断的融入提升。
Osifu often says: When the mind is upright, kind, sincere, pure, empty,
non-self, non-desire, unconditioned, non-seeking, non-fighting, energy will
continually flow in and ascension can be accomplished.
师父希望鬼道众生今天闻此教法，能够舍离五欲，修心圣道。
Osifu hopes that today the living beings in hungry ghost realm could
forsake five desires and cultivate the Way in the manner of Saint after hearing
this teaching.
师父希望鬼道众生今天闻此教法，能够放下执著，熄灭贪嗔。
Osifu hopes that today the living beings in hungry ghost realm could set
aside attachment and extinguish greed and anger after hearing this teaching.
师父希望鬼道众生今天闻此教法，能够自净其意，蒙佛接引。
Osifu hopes that today the living beings in hungry ghost realm could
purify your minds and receive the grace of Buddhas’ guiding after hearing this
teaching.
师父希望鬼道众生今天闻此教法，能够皈依三宝，受佛加持。
Osifu hopes that today the living beings in hungry ghost realm could take
refuge with triple Jewel and get the Buddhas’ blessings after hearing this
teaching.
师父希望鬼道众生今天闻此教法，能够离苦得乐，往生善处。
Osifu hopes that today the living beings in hungry ghost realm could be
free from all suffering and gain happiness as well as be reborn in good places
after hearing this teaching.
师父希望鬼道众生今天闻此教法，能够早出轮回，早日成佛。
Osifu hopes that today the living beings in hungry ghost realm could get
rid of cycle of rebirth and attain Buddhahood soon after hearing this teaching.
同样的祝福送给地狱道、畜生道、人道、修罗道、天道所有的众生。
The same blessings are given to all living beings in the hell realm, the
animal realm, the human realm, the Ashura realm and the heavenly realm.
同样的功德回向给地狱道、畜生道、人道、修罗道、天道所有的众生。
The same merits are transferred to all living beings in the hell realm,
the animal realm, the human realm, the Ashura realm and the heavenly realm.
时至子时，大家还在坚持听经闻法，师父很感动、很欣慰、很赞叹！
The time is getting to midnight, and everyone is still persevering
with hearing teaching and dharma. Osifu is deeply touched and very gratified,
speaking highly of you.
