Guanshiyin Bodhisattva
October 15th, 2011
[诸佛菩萨殊胜因缘] 载二月十九为观音圣诞,六月十九为观音成道,九月十九为观音胜缘 (出家)。
According to records of the
special causes of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, February 19th in lunar calendar
is the memorial birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattava, and lunar June 19th is the anniversary
of Guanyin enlightenment, and lunar September 19th is the day of pravrajana.
观世音菩萨,梵文 Avalokiteśvara,又作观自在菩萨、光世音菩萨,是四大菩萨之一。
Guanshiyin Bodhisattva in Sanskrit is Avalokiteśvara, also
called GuanZiZai Bodhisattva or GuangShiYin Bodhisattva, and is one of the four
major Bodhisattvas.
他相貌端庄慈祥,经常手持净瓶杨柳,以无量的智慧和神通,大慈大悲,普救世间疾苦。
He looks dignified and kind, often holding a bottle of pure
water with willow branch, with infinite wisdom and supernatural powers,
infinite kindness and compassion, to universally rescue the living beings out
of sufferings and bitterness in the world.
当人们遇到灾难时,只要念其名号,便前往救度,所以称观世音(详见《妙法莲华经观世音菩萨普门品》)。
When people caught in disasters, only chanting his name he
will go to rescue and save those people, so he is called Guanshiyin.( for
details please refer to the Wonderful
Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra—The Universal Door of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva )
《法华经》中释迦牟尼佛说“若有众生多于淫欲,常念恭敬观世音菩萨,便得离欲。若多嗔恚,常念恭敬观世音菩萨,便得离嗔。若多愚痴,常念恭敬观世音菩萨,便得离痴。”
In the Wonderful Dharma
Lotus Flower Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha said:“ If any living being with weighty desires can
constantly revere and keep in mind Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, his desires will subside.
If someone with much anger can constantly revere and keep in mind Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva, then his anger will subside. If someone dull and foolish can
constantly revere and keep in mind Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, he will subdue his stupidity.”
《大悲心陀罗尼经》中,佛告大众“此观世音菩萨。不可思议威神之力。已于过去无量劫中。已作佛竟号正法明如来。大悲愿力。为欲发起一切菩萨。安乐成熟诸众生故现作菩萨。”
In the Great Compassion Dharani
Sutra, Shakyamuini Buddha told people: “This Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva has
unimaginable mighty and holy powers. Before uncountable kalpas, he had already
become a Buddha named True Dharma Brightness Tathagata. Because of the power of
his great compassionate resolve, and in order to call upon all Bodhisattvas to
comfort all living beings, he manifested as a Bodhisattva.”
同时,观世音菩萨是西方极乐世界阿弥陀佛座下的上首菩萨,同大势至菩萨一起,是阿弥陀佛的胁侍菩萨,并称“西方三圣”。
Meanwhile, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, together with
Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva is the first higher hierarchy Bodhisattvas under
the Buddha Amitabha in the Western Land of the Ultimate Bliss. The two Bodhisattvas
are the assistant Bodhisattvas of the Buddha Amitabha, and they are called the
Western Three Sages.
又释迦牟尼佛、地藏王菩萨与观世音菩萨常於此娑婆世界度化众生,与此土有情,具甚深因缘,故世称「娑婆三圣」。
Again, Shakyamuni Buddha, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva often instruct and enlighten the sentient beings in this Saha land,
and they have very deep connections with the living beings in this land so that
they are called the Saha Three Sages.
观世音菩萨在梵文佛经中称为「阿缚卢枳帝湿伐逻」( Avalokiteśvara),在中文佛典中的译名,有好几种,竺法护译为「光世音」,鸠摩罗什的旧译为「观世音」,玄奘的新译为「观自在」,中国通用的则为罗什的旧译。唐朝时因避唐太宗李世民的讳,略去"世"字,简称观音。但照梵文原义,尚可译作「观世自在」、「观世音自在」、「窥音」、「现音声」、「圣观音」等。
Guanshiyin Bodhisattva in Sanskrit is called Avalokiteśvara,
and there are several translations for his name in the Chinese Buddhist
Scriptures. For example, ZhuFaHa translated it into GuangShiYin, the old
translation version by Kumarajiva was Guanshiyin, while the new translation
version by Hsuan Chang was GuanZiZai. The old version by Kumarajiva is widely
used in China. In Tang Dynasty, due to the taboo on using the name of Emperor
Li ShiMin, the word ‘Shi’ was omitted, and was abbreviated as Guanyin. However,
according to the original meaning in Sanskrit, it can also be translated into
‘GuanShiZiZai’, ‘GuanShiYin ZiZai’, ‘KuiYin’, ‘XianYinSheng’,‘Sheng Guanyin’, etc.
梵文意译,又称光世音、观自在、观世自在等,全称尊号是“大慈大悲救苦救难观世音菩萨”。观世音的名字蕴含了菩萨大慈大悲济世的功德和思想。
The free translation in Sanskrit he is also called as
GuangShiYin, GuanZiZai, and GuanShiZiZai, and his full title is Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva with Infinite Kindness and Compassion Saving and Rescuing People
out of Sufferings and Misfortunes. The title of Guanshiyin contains an idea
that the Bodhisattva’s virtues and merits of benefiting the world with infinite
kindness and compassion.
据《妙法莲华经》记载,“若有无量百千万亿众生受诸苦恼,闻是观世音菩萨,一心称名,观世音菩萨即时观其音声,皆得解脱。”
According to the records of the Wonderful Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra,
“If all the countless hundreds of thousands of millions of
living beings tormented by misery and pain hear of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, and
with all their hearts invoke his name, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva will immediately
respond to their prayers and set them free.”
观音菩萨与文殊菩萨、普贤菩萨、地藏菩萨一起,被称为四大菩萨。观音菩萨在佛教诸菩萨中,位居各大菩萨之首,是我国佛教信徒最崇奉的菩萨,拥有的信徒最多,影响最大。
Guanshiyin Bodhisattva together with Manjushri, Samantabhadra,
Ksitigarbha, are known as the four major Bodhisattvas. Guanshiyin Bodhisattva
ranks the first place among the major Bodhisattvas in Buddhism, is the one who
is mostly worshipped by the Buddhists in our country, and he is also the one with
the largest number of believers and the greatest influence.
观世音菩萨的意思,可有两种解释:1.是《楞严经》卷六所说这位菩萨最初的修行方法,是耳根不向外闻,而是向内自闻耳根中能闻的闻性,由此做到「动静二相,了然不生」。
There are two explanations to the meaning of Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva: one is that the Surangama Sutra, Volume Six says the
initial cultivation approaches of the Bodhisattva is that his ears don’t hear
things happened outside but hear his inner-self so as to attain the mind state
that the two phases of static and dynamic never rise.
不若一般人的耳根是向外分别声音,致受外境赞叹或诽谤等所动,生起贪、嗔、痴、爱、恶等烦恼,促成杀、盗、淫、妄恶业,再受轮转生死的苦报。
Differing from the ordinary whose ears are used to distinguish
the sounds outside, so their minds are swinging and moving caused by the outer
praises and defamatory, as a result they bring up the greediness, hatred,
obsession, affection, evil and other annoyances, which leads to evil karmas
such as killing, stealing, sexual misconducts, delusions and etc. and again
they receive the bitter retribution of death and birth.
若能观察分析世间音声之虚妄不实,而不受一切歪境干扰、影响,就能入于如如不动的大解脱境。
If one can observe and analyze the false and unreal secular
sounds, get rid of the disturbance and impact from the distorted outside
circumstances, he or she will enter the state of unmoving ultimate liberation.
2.是《法华经·普门品》所说:「若有无量百千万亿众生,受诸苦恼,闻是观世音菩萨,一心称名。观世音菩萨,即时观其音声,皆得解脱。」也就是说,凡有众生,若在苦恼之时,只要听说过观世音菩萨,并能虔诚地称念观音圣号,观音菩萨便会立即听到每一众生的音声而即时予以救济,所以叫做观世音。
The next is that the Wonderful
Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra—Universal Door says: “If there are immeasurable
living beings suffer from distress or bitterness, hearing Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva and chant his name single-mindedly. Guanshiyin Bodhisattva will perceive
their sounds instantly and relieve them immediately.” In other words, living
beings suffering from distress and bitterness heard of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva
and chant the Saint Title of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva with piety, Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva will hear the sounds from every living beings immediately and
relieve them instantly, hence the name Guanshiyin (contemplate the world’s
sound).
《悲华经》中也说:「宝藏佛授记云:汝观众生,生大悲心,欲断众生诸苦恼故,欲众生住安乐故,今当字汝,为观世音。」可见,《楞严经》是依观音法门的自修而言,而《法华经》(普门品)及《悲华经》则是依观音菩萨的度他而言。
The Compassionate Lotus
Sutra also says: “The Treasure Buddha awarding the Bodhisattvas the
distinctive marks of future Buddhahood says : When you view the living beings
you bring up great compassion and you intend to relieve the sentient being from
their sufferings and help them attain peace and happiness, so here grant you
the name of Guanshiyin.” Therefore, we can see that the Shurangama Sutra are expounded in the term of self-cultivation
approaches of Guanyin Dharma Door,
while the Wonderful Dharma Lotus Flower
Sutra—Universal Door and the Compassionate Lotus Sutra in term of Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva’s rescuing others.
至于「观自在菩萨」,是唐玄奘法师之译,最有名也最通用是出于《般若波罗蜜多心经》的头一句,现在流行的《心经》,便是出于玄奘的译笔。
As for GuanZiZai Bodhisattva, it was translated by Master Hsuan
Chang in Tang Dynasty. The most famous and common example comes from the first
sentence of the Prajna Paramita Heart
Sutra, and the current popular translation version of the Heart Sutra was just translated by Hsuan
Chang.
但是,《心经》自古以来,共有七种汉文译本,玄奘属于第二译,初译则出于罗什之手,故在玄奘未去印度求法之前,他已学到了《心经》,而且对于观世音菩萨抱有绝对的信仰心。
However, there are a total of seven Chinese translating
versions about the Heart Sutra since ancient times. The version by Hsuan Chang
was the second translating version, and the first was by Kumarajiva. So before Hsuan
Chang went to India seeking for the Dharma, he had already learned the Heart
Sutra and had absolute faith in Guanshiyin Bodhisattva.
根据玄奘大师传中记述,他至少有多次祈求观音灵感的经验,例如:
According to the records in the biography of Master Hsuan
Chang, he had several efficacious experiences of praying to Guanshiyin. For
example:
1. 当他经过八百里流沙河的时候,上无飞鸟,下无走兽,而妖魔鬼火之多,犹如天上的繁星,不知遇到了多少邪魔恶鬼,在他前后缠绕,他都以念《心经》而遣散了这些魔鬼的作祟。
1. When he passed through the 800 miles of Quick Sand River,
there were no birds overhead and no animals around, while the demons and
wildfire of ghosts were as much as the stars in the sky. He did not remember
how many demonic and evil spirits he had encountered and they wrapped him
around, but he dismissed those demons’ mischief by chanting the Heart Sutra.
2. 当他出了玉门关,晚宿沙漠中,随从他的胡人忽起变心,拔刀指向玄奘三藏,玄奘即时诵经念观世音菩萨,胡人见了顿失杀心,又睡了下去。
2.When walking through the YuMen Pass, he spent the night in
the desert and his retinues, the Northern races (the Northern barbarian tribes
in ancient China )changed their minds suddenly and took their swords pointing
at Hsuan Chang, so he instantly chanted the saint title of Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva. Seeing this, the Northern Races immediately lost their intentions
of killing him and went back to sleep again.
3. 玄奘正在横度八百里流沙,亦即是莫贺延碛的时候,经过了五天四夜的沙漠旅行,未得滴水润喉,他和所骑之马,均因缺水而倒卧在沙漠之中,此时奘师便在心中默祷观世音菩萨,他说:「玄奘此行,不求财利,无冀名誉,但为无上正法来耳,仰惟菩萨,慈念群生,以救苦为务,此为苦矣,宁不知耶?」
3.When Hsuan Chang was crossing over the 800 miles of the
quicksand, where is called HaShum GoBi now, after travelling in the desert for
five days and four nights without a drop of water, he and his ride the horse laid
down in the desert due to lacking of water. At this very moment, Hsuan Chang
prayed in his heart silently and said: “This journey of Hsuan Chang is seeking neither
fortunes nor fame but only for the supreme Dharma, and I sincerely pray to Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva to bless the living beings and relieve their sufferings. And now I
am in such affliction, don’t you know that?”
祷告之后,在夜半忽有凉风触身,爽快如沐寒水,全身舒畅,眼得明朗,马也能起来走了,走了十多里,马儿忽然走向岔路,制之不住,又经数里,忽见青草数亩,并有一个水池。奘师与马,始得救济,重保身命,此一水草绝非原有,乃是观音菩萨慈悲变现而来。
After the prayer, at midnight he suddenly felt a gust of cool
breezes touching his body, as comfortable as if he had been showered by cold
water. His whole body relaxed, his eyes were clear and bright, and his horse
could walk again. After walked about ten miles, the horse suddenly ran towards a
spur road and could not be stopped. After another few miles away, there were
suddenly a few acres of grassland and a pool. Hsuan Chang and the horse were
saved and had their breath back. There was by no means a water pool and
grassland there originally, but it was compassionate transformation by Guanshiyin
Bodhisattva.
为什么观世音又名为观自在?根据梵文「阿缚卢枳帝湿伐逻」的原义,含有「观照纵任」或「君主」的意思,也就是观照万法而任运自在的意思。
Why Guanshiyin is also called GuanZiZai? According the
Sanskrit that the original meaning of Avalokiteśvara contains the meaning of ‘contemplation
and ease’ or ‘monarch’, in other words, it means contemplating all the Dharmas
and conforming to it at ease with absolute liberation.
现在借用太虚大师的话来作一解释,他说:「因为观世音菩萨有般若的智慧,照见五蕴皆空,所以能救苦救难。平常人执五蕴为世界、为我,就不能照见五蕴皆空,有自、有他、有人、有我。要能照见五蕴皆空,则人我、是非皆能消除。真正做到无人无我,则能以众人苦难为苦难,这样才能成就大慈大悲,才能成就大公无私的伟大人格,发挥救苦救难的作用。」(见《太虚全书·杂藏》五五一页)
Now, let’s use words of Master TaiXu for an explanation, he
said: “Because Guanshiyin Bodhisattva has Prajna Wisdom clearly seeing that the
Five Skandhas are all empty, he can save people from sufferings. While the
ordinary persons firmly believe the Five Skandhas as the real world or themselves,
so they cannot empty the Five Skandhas but have the thought of self and others.
If one does contemplate the Five Skandhas and discover that they are empty, the
distinctive thoughts on self and others, right and wrong can be eliminated. If we
can truly manage to perform without others or self, we can regard the sufferings
of others as our own. Only in this way can we achieve the great kindness and compassion,
can attain the great selfless personality of saving the living beings out of distress.”

若依据自利功德释观世音三字,观是能观智,包括一心三观之智,世音是所观之境,包括一境三谛之理。菩萨以一心三观之智,观于一境三谛之理,圆观圆证,自在无碍,因名观世音自在。
Based on self interest merits, the three words of Guan shi yin
can be explained as: the word Guan is the wisdom of contemplating capability, including
the wisdom of one mind capable of contemplating three difference states, while the
words ShiYin refer to the states of insight including the principle of
realizing three truths from one state. The Bodhisattva with wisdom of one mind
capable of contemplating three different states, realizes three truths from
each state, which is perfect contemplation and perfect verification in a
complete free mind state, hence the name Guanshiyin ZiZai。
若根据利他功德释,观是教,世音是机,教指菩萨寻声救苦的大悲心,机指九法界众生,称念菩萨圣号或悲哀求救之音声。因菩萨能兴慈运悲,拔苦与乐,普门示现,自在无碍,故名观世音自在。
Based on other interest merits, the three words of Guan shi yin
can be explained as: the word Guan is to teach or instruct others, while the
words ShiYin refer to the chance. The meaning of teaching and instructing
refers to the Bodhisattva’s great compassion to save beings out of sufferings
when hearing their cries for help. The meaning of chance refers to the sentient
beings in the nine Dharma Realms who chant the saint title of the Bodhisattva
or make miserable sounds for help. Because the Bodhisattva can bring up the
compassion and practice the kindness, relieve afflictions and endow happiness,
manifest him universally, freely and unimpededly, hence he was named as Guanshiyin
ZiZai.
自利是智,利他是悲,菩萨依智能之体,起慈悲之用,遍观法界众生,随其机缘,拔苦与乐,自由自在,无所障碍,因名观世音。亦名观自在。
Self-benefiting is called wisdom while benefiting others is
called compassion. The Bodhisattva bases on the substance of wisdom, brings up the
function of kindness and compassion by universally viewing the living beings
all over the Dharma Realms, relieve afflictions and endow happiness according
to their situations and karmas, manifest him freely and unimpededly, hence he
was also named as GuanZiZai.
或有人说:旧译名观世音,新译名观自在,征之佛经,并不尽然。或说观自在,另有其人,非即是观世音,更不可信。其实,观世音即是观自在,观自在亦即是观世音,而大悲心陀罗尼经,世尊则名之为观世音自在。
Maybe someone says: the old translation version uses Guanshiyin
while the new version uses GuanZiZai, and it is contradictory in the Buddhist
Scriptures. Maybe someone says that GuanZiZai is someone else not this Guanshiyin;
this statement is more unbelievable. As a matter of fact, Guanshiyin is
GuanZiZai while GuanZiZai is Guanshiyin, and the Load Buddha named him as GuanshiyinZiZai
in the Great Compassion Dharani Sutra.
观世音菩萨出家日,我们应当做些什么呢?
