Learning from Bodhisattva Samantabhadra
August 15th,
2011
前天刚刚圆满为期十六天的九华行,接下来我们又紧锣密鼓的筹备安排前往峨眉山的朝圣之旅。
The day before yesterday
we successfully completed the sixteen days of pilgrimage trip to Mount Jiuhua,
and next we have to intensively prepare for our worship trip to Mount Emei.
节奏很快、频率很高、时间很紧。
All goes in fast pace
and high frequency, and time is vey tight.
朝峨眉起航时间是8月22日 ,为期4天,26号下午返航。
The four days of pilgrimage
trip to Mount Emei will start on August 22 and we will return on 26th.
朝峨眉结束后,朝拜国内四大佛教圣地四大菩萨道场圆满结束。
After our pilgrimage trip
to Mount Emei, our journey to the major four Bodhisattvas Bodhimandala in the
domestic four Buddhist Holy Lands, will come to a successful conclusion.
吾等国内朝圣行程以五台山文殊菩萨道场为始,以峨眉普贤菩萨道场为终。始于大智,圆满于大行。
Our domestic pilgrimage
trip started from Mount Wutai, Manjushri Bodhisattva’s shrine and ended at
Mount Emei, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva’s shrine. Begins with great wisdom and completes
in great practice.
国内朝圣礼佛圆满后,师父会带着弟子有缘人前往印度朝圣礼佛,踏着释迦牟尼佛的足迹,圆满朝圣的最后旅程。
After the completion of
our domestic pilgrimage, Osifu will take the disciples and predestined friends
going for a pilgrimage in India. We will follow the steps of Shakyamuni Buddha
and complete the final period of our pilgrimage journey.
朝圣结束后,我们的主要精力就放在“造福苍生普济万灵"上。太多的事等着我们做,我们该全力以赴践行我们的大愿。
After the pilgrimage
trip, our main efforts will be put onto benefit the sentient beings, and rescue
and help millions of spirits. There are too many things waiting ahead for us
and we should do our best to put our great vows into practice.
大行普贤菩萨是我们效法的榜样!
The Great Practices of
Samantabhdra Bodhisattva is the example for us to follow.
普贤菩萨早已在他方成佛,为助此土世尊教化众生故示现菩萨形像。
Samantabhdra Bodhisattva
had become a Buddha in other land many eons ago. In order to assist the World-honored
One of Saha Land to teach and transform sentient beings, he manifested in image
of a Bodhisattva.
普贤菩萨,梵音名号Samantabhadra
,或 Vishvabhadra。音译三曼多跋陀罗菩萨、三曼陀菩萨。又作遍吉普贤菩萨菩萨。
我国佛教四大菩萨(观音菩萨、文殊菩萨、地藏菩萨、普贤菩萨)之一。
His Sanskrit name called
Samantabhadra or Vishvabhadra, one of the four Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva
Avalokiteshavara, Bodhisattva Manjushri, Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, Bodhisattva Samantabhadra)
of the Buddhism in our country.
普贤菩萨辅助释迦佛弘扬佛道,且遍身十方,常为诸佛座下的法王子,他和释迦牟尼、文殊菩萨合称为“华严三圣”。
Bodhisattva Samantabhadra
assists Shakyamuni Buddha to carry forward the Buddha’s Way. His body is
pervasive to the ten directions and often manifests as a prince of the Buddhas.
Shakyamuni Buddha, Manjushri Bodhisattva and him are called “the Three Sages of
Avatamsaka”
普贤行愿品言:‘普贤行愿威神力,普现一切如来前。’又言:‘十方如来有长子,其名号曰普贤尊。’
Gandhavyuha Sutra says
that the power carried by Samantabhadra’s practices and vows could present
before all the Thus Come Ones. It also says that the eldest son of the Thus
Come Ones in ten directions is called Venerable Samantabhadra。
普贤菩萨,不但能广赞诸佛无尽功德,且能修无上供养,能作广大佛事,能度无边有情,其智慧之高,愿行之深,唯佛能知。
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva,
who is not only widely praise the endless merits and virtues of Buddhas but
also cultivate supreme offerings, can conduct the Buddhist practices , rescue and
enlighten infinite sentient beings. Only Buddhas could know his excellent wisdom
and his profound practices.
宝藏佛授记他未来在北方“知水善净功德世界”,圆满成就无上正等正觉,佛号为“智刚吼自在相王如来”。
The Treasure Buddha
granted him to complete his supreme Enlightenment in the Northern “Wisdom Water
and Kind &
Pure Land of Merit and Virtue” in future with Buddha titled “Jnana Vajra
Ishvara Tathagata”
《华严经
普贤行愿品》卷四十,说普贤菩萨十种广大之行愿,即:礼敬诸佛、称赞如来、广修供养、忏悔业障、随喜功德、请转法轮、请佛住世、常随佛学、恒顺众生、普皆回向。
Avatamsaka Sutra chapter
40 says that the ten practices and vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva are as
follows, Pay homage and respect to all Buddhas. Praise the Thus Come Ones. Make
abundant offerings. Repent misdeeds an evil karma. Rejoice at other’s merits
and virtues. Request the Buddhas to turn the Dharma wheel. Request the Buddhas
to remain in the world. Follow the teachings of the Buddhas at all times. Accommodate
and benefit all living beings. Transfer all merits and virtues universally.
经中一一述此十大愿,明其功德无量,临命终时,得此愿王引导,往生阿弥陀佛极乐世界。
The ten great vows were
described one by one in the sutra, which clearly explained his infinite merits
and virtues. With the receive and guide of this King of Vows while death is
approaching, people will be reborn to the Ultimate Bliss Land of Amitabha.
然此十大愿为一切菩萨行愿之标帜,故亦称普贤之愿海。以此菩萨之广大行愿,一般称为大行普贤菩萨。
The ten great vows are
the flag of the practices of all Bodhisattvas; thereby they are also called as the
Vows Sea of Samantabhadra. Due to the vast practices and vows of this
Bodhisattva, he is generally called as Great Practice Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
在密教之中,以此菩萨表示菩提心,视之与金刚手、金刚萨埵、一切义成就菩萨同体。
In the Vajnayana,
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva represents the Bodhi resolve and is regarded as the
one share one body with Vajrapani, Vajrasattva and All Righteous Achievement Bodhisattvas.
一行《大日经疏》卷一解释普贤,谓‘普’是遍一切处之义,‘贤’是最妙善之义。
Commentary
on the Mahāvairocana Tantra” volume 1 explained PuXian,
namely Pu means pervasive to everywhere while Xian means the marvelous virtues.
以菩提心所起之愿行及身口意悉皆平等遍一切处,纯一妙善,备具众德,故名为普贤。
He was called
Samantabhadra due to the practices and vows inspired by the Bodhi Resolve, and
the body, speech and mind are equally pervasive to all directions and
everywhere, and because he is pure, wonderful and virtuous with all merits and
virtues
再听一个佛教故事,当然只是一个故事,不必执着其真假。
Here comes another
Buddhist story, for sure it is just a story, and don’t persist in figuring out
if it is true or false.
普贤菩萨,行愿无穷,分身尘刹,随缘教化众生。
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva
cultivates his infinite practices and vows with his incarnations all over the Buddhas
Lands to instruct and enlighten sentient beings according to situations.
据史书记载:中国佛教古德拾得大士,是普贤菩萨的化身(传说传奇而已,呵呵)。
According to history
record, the ancient sage Tuas Shide in China Buddhism was the incarnation of
Samantabhadra Bodhisattva. (Well, it was just a story)
天台山国清寺的丰干禅师,一日行经赤城道旁,闻草丛中有儿童啼哭,趋前视察,见一小孩约十来岁,询其姓名,答:‘我无家、无姓、亦无名。’
Monk Fenggan in Temple
Guoqing, Mount Tiantai once passed through the road sides of Chicheng heard
child crying in the grass. He approached to inspect, and found a ten-years old child.
He asked about his name but only heard the child answered: I have no home and
no name”.
丰干禅师愍其无依,带回国清寺,交库房当茶童。因是拾来,名之拾得
Chan Master Fenggan was
sorry for his helplessness, so he took the child back to Temple Gaoqing and
arranged him as a tea boy in storeroom. Because the child was picked up by roadside,
so was given the name Shide.
由于拾得聪明伶俐,三年后升任斋堂香灯,及执掌出食等杂事。
Because of his
brightness, Shide was promoted to the incense-lamp keeper in the Vegetarian
Hall and in charge of food and other miscellaneous things.
一日,四顾无人,竟登座与所供奉的圣像对坐而食,还呵斥圣像小果,焦芽败种。
事被知库灵熠禅师看见,责其对圣像不恭,可能头脑有毛病,罢其香灯职,派往厨房洗碗碟,常将多余饭菜,盛于竹筒,赠其挚友寒山子。
One day, he looked
around, noticing there was nobody else, so he seated himself opposite the
worship icons eating and scolded the icons as small fruits, wilted buds and bad
seeds. Those things were witnessed by the manager of storehouse, Chan Master
Lingyi, who blamed him for disrespecting the icons and thought there might be
something wrong with his mind. He was fired and sent to kitchen to wash dishes.
He often packed up the extra food with bamboo tube and gave to his best friend
Hanshanzi.
有一次,寺中饭食花果被鸟啄食,拾得竟执杖打寺中供养的山神像,责其守护伽蓝不力,有失职责,枉受沙门供养。
Once, the meals, flowers
and fruits in the temple was pecked by birds, Shide picked up rod hitting the
statue of Maintain God and blamed his lack of accountability to the temple,
failure to take his responsibility and unworthy of the offerings by the monks.
当晚寺僧,皆梦见山神说:‘拾得打我,骂我。’灵熠禅师至山神像前视察,果见山神像有杖打痕迹,始知拾得来历不凡。
That night the monks in
the temple all dreamed of the Mountain God said that Shide beat and scolded
him. Chan Master Lingyi went to inspect the statue of Mountain God seeing the
rod beating trace on the statue and begun to know that the origin of Shide was extraordinary.
拾得与寒山子时相往来,还常对人说佛法。但人不信,反而讥诮怒骂,甚至打之。
Shide kept close
friendship with Hanshanzi and often taught people Buddha Dharma. However nobody
believed in him, in turn they insulted and even beat him.
寒山对拾得曰:‘世间人秽我、欺我、辱我、笑我、轻我、贱我、恶我、骗我、我该如何对他?’
Hanshan asked Shide:
“people foul me, bully me, insult me, laugh at me, look down upon me, scorn me,
hurt me and lie to me, what should I do?”
拾得答曰:‘那只有忍他、由他、避他、耐他、敬他、不要理他,再过几年,你且看他。’
Shide answered: “do
nothing but tolerate him, spoil him, avoid him, be patient with him, respect
him, stay away from him then watch him in a few years”.
后拾得掌牧牛之职,一日,正值寺中半月布萨,律师正为僧众在堂中说戒。
Later Shide was in
charge of the cattle. One day, when there was holding Half-month Precepts
Recitation Session, a vinaya monk was telling the monks precepts in the hall.
拾得驱牛群到法堂前倚门而立,并抚掌笑曰:‘悠悠哉,聚得作相,这个如何?’说戒和尚怪其不敬,怒斥曰:‘下人疯狂,破我说戒。’
Shide drove the herd of cattle
to the front of the Teaching Hall leaning against the door putting his palms
together and said with laughter: ‘gathering for acting, how about this?’ The
monk who was telling precepts blamed his disrespect and said angrily: “the
servant is crazy and breaks into my precepts teaching.”
拾得见其嗔心起,即说偈曰:‘无嗔即是戒,心净即出家;我性与汝合,一切法无差。’戒和尚见拾得嘻皮笑脸,气得下堂来打拾得,要他驱牛出去。
Shide saw that the
hatred mind of the monk was provoked and said: “no anger is the precept and the
purity of mind is Pravrajana (to become a monk). My nature is same as yours and
all Dharma are no differences.” Seeing him laughing sarcastically, the precepts
monk became so angry that he stepped out to hit Shide and urged him to drive
the cattle out.
拾得曰:‘我不赶牛了,这群牛,皆大德前生的知事僧,它们都有法号,不信,且看我叫它们出来。’
Shide said: “I quit!
These cattle were the deacon monks of your previous life. They all have Dharma
names. I will name them out if you don’t believe.”
随即对牛群说:‘前生律师弘靖站出来。’即有一白牛作声而过,又曰:‘前生典座光超出来,’又有一黑牛应声而出。
Then he said to the herd
of cattle: “the pre-existence vinaya monk Hongjing stand out”, then a white ox passed
by while mooing. Again he said: “the pre-existence steward monk Guangchao stand
out” and a black one answered and came out.
拾得又叫:‘直岁靖本出来,’又有一牯牛应声出来,最后,拾得牵一牛说曰:‘前生不持戒,人面而畜心,汝合招此咎,怨恨于何人,佛力虽广大,汝却辜佛恩。’
Shide called out again:
“Secretary Monk Jingben stand out,” there was a castrated bull made the
response. Lastly, Shide pulled a cow saying: “Those not kept precepts in last
life ended as beings with a human face but animal heart. It serves you all
right and can not blame anyone. Although the mighty power of Buddhas is blessing
you, you all turn down the grace of the Buddhas.”
自此,僧众始知拾得,并非凡间俗子,不再以疯子看待。
Since then, the monks
begun to realize that Shide was not a mediocre person and they did not regard
him as a maniac any more.
后因阿弥陀佛化身的丰干禅师,对丘太守说:寒山拾得,是文殊普贤的化身,圣迹显露,与寒山子同离国清寺,后不知所终。
Later due to Chan Master
Fenggan, reincarnation of Amitabha told the Governor Qiu that Shide was reincarnation
of Samantabhadra while Hanshan, reincarnation of Manjusri. He left Temple
Guoqing with Hanshan and disappeared because he had disclosed his identity.
文殊、普贤两位大士,一为诸佛母,一为诸佛长子,公孙二人,常在十方诸佛前,共作佛事,游戏人间,常在一起。
Manjusri and
Samantabhadra, two Tuas, one is mother of the Buddhas and one is the eldest son
of the Buddhas. Both of them often work together playing through their life in
the world, and assist Buddhas in the ten directions to conduct the Buddhist
practices.
淳熙年间,文殊菩萨应身为兜率寺戒阇黎时,普贤菩萨亦同时化身为周氏女,排行第七,人皆称她周七娘。
During the times of
Chunxi, Manjushri was reincarnated as the precepts archarya in Temple Tusita
while Samantabhadra reincarnated as a woman ranking the seventh in her family
and was called Chow Qiniang.
生时便有种种神异,长大后不肯嫁人,每天行乞于市,晚常宿于普济桥下,常与戒阇黎在一起,妙行莫测。时人不解,笑为疯婆。
There were kinds of
unusual miracles happened in her birth; she refused to get married when grown
up and lived by begging in the town everyday; Moreover, she often slept under
the bridge and accompanied with precept archaya and their whereabouts were
unpredictable that people were confused and laughed her as a crazy woman.
后有圣者歌曰:‘戒师文殊,周婆普贤,随肩搭背,万世流传。’后人始知是菩萨应世。
Later there were sages
sang: “Manjusri, the precept monk and Samantabhadra, the Chow female; they were
together hand in hand and passed generation after generation.” Later the
descendants realized that they were Bodhisattvas reincarnated in the world.
佛菩萨再来我们不必去考证执着,我们当然希望每个时期都有佛菩萨再来度脱众生。
We don’t have to
research if they were reincarnations of the Buddhas or Bodhisattvas, and
certainly we hope that there would be Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in every time
stage coming to rescue all beings.
当前这个时期也会有很多佛菩萨、辟支佛、罗汉来此娑婆救度众生。
At present, there are
also many Buhhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas and Arahats who come to this
Saha Land to rescue and enlighten sentient beings.
当前这个时期也会有很多神仙圣真来此娑婆救度众生。
At present, there are
also many deities, celestial beings and sages who come to this Saha Land to
rescue and enlighten sentient beings.
当然根据阴阳平衡规律,有神佛仙圣真来”造福苍生普济万灵,也会有魔怪邪灵“乱世乱法障碍回归”。
Surely, according to the
Law of Yin and Yang balance, there are deities, Buddhas, celestial beings and
sages coming to benefit and rescue the sentient beings; meanwhile, there would
be evil spirits and demons coming to destroy and ruin the world and the Dharma
as to hinder the returning and reunification.
佛法渐强
魔法渐弱,魔法不会自动离开历史舞台的。
As the Dharma getting
stronger and the Demonic Method getting weakened, the Demonic Method will never
leave the stage of history voluntarily.
正法渐强
邪法渐弱,邪法不会自动离开历史舞台的。
As the Proper Dharma
getting stronger and the Evil Method getting weakened, the Evil Method will
never leave the stage of history voluntarily.
正气渐强
邪气渐弱,邪气不会自动离开历史舞台的。
As the justice getting
stronger and the evil influence getting weakened, the evil influence will never
leave the stage of history voluntarily.
我们知道:邪不胜正!
We know that the evil
will never surpass the justice!
我们知道:大势所趋!
We know that all is driven
by the general trend!
我们知道:顺应天意!
We know that all should conform
to the god’s will.
我们知道:顺道而行!
We know that all should
go along with the Way!
我们知道:顺应规律!
We know that all should comply
with the Law!
我们知道:遵守法则!
We know that all should
obey the Rules!
我们知道:继续前行!
We know that we should
keep on going!
我们知道:疾步走 不停留!
We know that we should
move quickly and never stop!
我们知道:行者无疆!
We know that there is no
boundary for practitioners!
今天就讲到这里吧!
Let’s
make a conclusion here today!
阿弥陀佛!
