Bring forth Vows

昨日,2011年11月11日11时,很多弟子有缘人发出了自己的大愿,师父上线后看到了部分弟子有缘人的大愿,非常好,为你们高兴。
Yesterday, at 11:00 am on
November 11th, 2011, many followers and predestined friends brought
forth their own vows, which Osifu had seen after getting online. It’s really
nice. 〇sifu felt happy for you.
真正的修心修行修炼人、真正的学佛人,没有诚心发愿,绝对不会成就,你怎么学也不会成就的。
The real practitioner and Buddhists
engaged in mind discipline, cultivation and practice can never make accomplishment
without sincere vows, whatever method is involved.
无愿不成佛!
One won’t become a Buddha
without vows!
发愿
发起誓愿之意。又作发大愿、发愿心、发志愿、发无上愿。总指发求佛果菩提之心(菩提心);别指完成净土,以救济众生之心(即誓愿)。
Bring forth one’s vows
It means to pledge one’s oath,
or bring forth great aspiration, bring forth one’s willing mind, bring forth
volunteering and bring forth unsurpassed resolve for Bodhi. All in all, it
means bring forth the mind to seek for Buddha-fruition (Bodhimind). Another
meaning is the mind of bringing about pure lands and rescue sentient beings (vow).
菩萨所发之愿,有总愿、别愿、净土成佛愿、秽土成佛愿等,种类甚多。
The vows brought forth by
Bodhisattvas have plenty of kinds such as general vow, separated vow, the vow
of accomplishing Buddhahood on Pure Land, the vow of accomplishing Buddhahood
on defiled land, etc.
净土宗,誓愿往生净土者发遣自己修善,此发愿往生之心,称为回向发愿心。
For the Pure Land Sect, those
people who bring forth the vow of being reborn in the pure land urging them themselves
to cultivate goodness. The mind of bringing forth the vow for rebirth is called
dedicated resolve.
愿心大体可分为二:(一)发求菩提之愿,(二)发度化有情之愿。又四弘誓愿、十大愿皆属于发愿。此外,有关修善作福等皆须先发愿,而记其趣旨之文称为发愿文,又作愿文、誓愿文。如南朝梁代沈约之千僧会愿文、隋代智者大师之发愿文、善导之发愿文等皆是。
Resolve can be divided into two
parts generally: 1. Resolve to seek for Bodhi fruition. 2. Resolve to rescue
and transform sentient beings. And four vast vows and ten great vows belong to bringing
forth one’s resolve, too. In addition, one should bring forth resolve in
priority to cultivate goodness and merits, and the record of which is called
oath text. For example, the oath text of thousands of Buddhists of ShenYue in
the Liang of the Southern Dynasty, the oath text of the Wise Master in the Sui
Dynasty, the oath text of Master Shandao, and etc.
发愿,也就是树立学佛目标。每个人发心不同,所以,发愿内容也不尽相同。
Bringing forth one’s resolve is
to set a goal of practicing Buddhism. Everyone's motivation is different. So,
the contents of vows are not quite similar.
我们要往生西方极乐世界,就可以发愿:“愿生西方净土中,九品莲花为父母,花开见佛悟无生,不退菩萨为伴侣。”
If we want to be reborn in the
Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, we can bring forth the vow:" May be born
in the Western Pure Land; may the nine-ranking lotus is my parents. On meeting
Buddhas as soon as the lotus blooms I realized the infinity. Never retreat my
Bodhimind and always have so many great Bodhisattvas as my fellow cultivators."
如果我们发心行菩萨道,不仅希望自己成就,更希望利益一切众生,使众生都能听闻佛法、解脱生死,每天就可这样发愿:“愿以此功德,普及于一切,我等与众生,皆共成佛道。”
If we have the motivation of following the Mahayana Way of bodhisattvas, not only
expecting ourselves to make accomplishment, but also expecting to benefit all
sentient beings, making them heard Buddha Dharma and liberated from birth and
death cycle. Then we can bring forth such vows:
"May the merits and virtues be shared with
everyone everywhere, so that all sentient beings and I can accomplish
Buddhahood together."
我们所做的一切努力都要围绕相应目标进行。只有确立人生目标,所作所为才会有针对性。比如凡夫要买房子,为此就会努力赚钱、存钱。如果缺乏指向,钱一到手就随手花掉,即使赚得再多也无法积攒下来。修行也是同样,明确目标之后,我们所做的一切功德才会有明确归宿,才会日益增长。
All efforts we make should be focus
on the goal. Only setting up life goal can all behaviors and performances have
the direction. For example, an ordinary man will make his efforts to earn and
save money in order to buy a house. The money will be used up very soon if lack
of direction, and it still can't be saved even if a lot of money is earned. So
is the cultivation. After specifying the goal, all merits and virtues we make
would have a clear destination and increase day after day.
发愿,是发自内心的真切愿望。当我们念诵发愿文时,应当问一问自己:我理解发愿文的真实内涵吗?我的发愿是发自内心的吗?如果是由衷、真切的愿望,并且每天都在反复不断巩固,那么,这一愿力必能对修心修行修炼提升层次、圆满使命起到推动和引导作用。
Bringing forth one’s resolve is
to arouse the sincere wish from deep heart. When we are reading the oath text,
we should ask ourselves: Do I understand the true meaning of this oath text?
Does the vow arouse from deep heart? If the vow is heartfelt and sincere, and
is consolidated continuously day after day, well, the power of your vows will
be sure to promote and guide your mind discipline, cultivation and practice, improve
you to a higher level and complete the missions.
发愿要有至诚心、深心、切心。
The utmost sincere mind, faithful
mind and true mind is needed to bring forth the vows.
应该怎样发愿呢?
How to bring forth the vows?
先学习佛、菩萨、祖师、大德如何发愿,以及发愿的内容;然后,确定自己要发愿的内容。确定后,每天在佛前发(长时间熏习),向着这个目标努力修行。
First, learn from Buddhas,
Bodhisattvas, the patriarchs and the great virtuousness and learn how they brought
forth vows and the contents of vows. And then, determine the contents of your
vows. After determination, bring forth your vows in front of Buddhas(practice
for a long time) and cultivate diligently towards this goal.
可以把自己的发愿文写出来或打印出来,每天至少念一遍,也就是每天都要发愿,提醒自己,愿心不退!
You can write down or print your oath text and read
it once at least every day, which means that the vows should be brought forth
everyday so as to remind you never retreat from your resolve!
师父前日已经安排过了,从灵山二会开始,到达灵山的时候增加一项内容,就是每人都要在灵山会上当众公开宣读自己的发愿文,在灵山会上佛菩萨和护法神众的见证下发下自己的大愿。
这是无比庄严神圣的!
The day before yesterday, 〇sifu arranged for adding one
content when we reach the Vulture
Peak from the second Vulture Peak Assembly, namely, each one has to read his or
her own oath text publicly at the Vulture Peak Assembly, and bring forth his or
her own vows at the witness of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Guardian divinities,
which is unparalleled solemn and sacred!
当然,师父到达灵山的时候也会在灵山会上当众公开宣读自己的发愿文,在灵山会上佛菩萨和护法神众的见证下发下自己的大愿。
Certainly,
〇sifu will read his own oath
text publicly at the Vulture Peak Assembly and bring forth his own vows at the
witness of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Guardian divinities when 〇sifu arrives there.
师父要求大家把发愿列入你们的必修课,每天至少一遍。
〇sifu requests you all to take the bringing forth vows
into the compulsory courses and read once at least every day.
师父要求大家随身携带自己的发愿文,以后面见师父的时候,师父都会看看你们的发愿文,见证你们的愿心。
〇sifu requests you all to take the oath text with you.
When you meet 〇sifu in future, 〇sifu will take a look at your oath text and to
witness your resolve.
有愿有行方能成就!
Accomplishment
is up to both vows and practices!
只有空愿而不付诸行动,也是枉然。
It's
useless to bring forth empty vows but never carry them out.
净土宗常讲:信愿行。
The
Pure Land Sect often says: Belief, Resolve and Practice.
藕益大师云:念佛法门别无奇特,只是深信、切愿、力行为要耳。
Master
Ou Yi said: The Practice of Buddha Recitation has no other special methods except
the key point of faithful belief, earnest resolve and diligent practice.
彻悟禅师云:真为生死,发菩提心,以深信愿,持佛名号,此十六字,为念佛法门一大纲宗。
Master
Che Wu said: Do bring forth the resolve for Bodhi to get rid of birth and death,
and recite the name of Buddha with faithful belief and resolve. Those words are
the general guiding
principle for practicing the Buddha Recitation.
印光大师云:净土法门,以信愿行三法为宗。
Master
Yin Guang said: The Pure Land Practice takes three points which are belief, resolve
and practice as guiding principle.
信愿行是净土宗祖师所总结的净土法门之宗要。
Belief,
resolve and practice, which are summarized by the patriarch of the Pure Land
Sect, are the basic doctrine of the Pure Land Practice.
信,谓深信依佛言念佛求生西方必能遂愿,有信自(自心有佛性)、信他(信阿弥陀佛实有),信因信果等义。
Belief,
means having deep faith to Buddha's teachings. The vow of rebirth to the
Western Land with chanting the Buddha's name is sure to be fulfilled. It has
many meanings such as belief in oneself( self-nature is the Buddha-nature),
belief in others (belief the true existence of Amitabha), belief in cause and
effect, and etc.
愿,谓发愿命终往生净土,至彼国得不退转回入此界度化众生。
Resolve,
means bringing forth the vow of rebirth to the Pure Land when life is ended,
attaining non-retrogression in that land and returning back to the Saha world
to teach and transform the sentient beings.
行,分正行与助行。正行指修念佛,助行指兼修礼诵供养、六度万行等。
Practice
is divided into proper practice and assistant practice. The proper practice
means to cultivate chanting Buddha's name, while the assistant practice means
to supplement with paying homage, reciting, offering, the Six
Perfections and all practices, and etc.
深信切愿,尤被强调为念佛往生的前提和关键。藕益大师在《佛说阿弥陀经要解》中云:得生与否,全凭信愿之有无;品位高下,全由持名之深浅。
Faithful
belief and earnest resolve is particularly emphasized to be the premise and key
point of the rebirth by chanting Amitabha. Master Ou Yi said in Interpretation of the Sutra of the Buddha’s
Teaching on Amitabha: The success of rebirth
in pure land is up to belief and resolve completely while the grade is up to the
concentrated holding of the name of Amitabha.
对净宗行人来讲,信、愿、行三,缺一不可。
For
practitioners of Pure Land Sect, none of three points such as belief, resolve
and practice is dispensable.
对正法行者、大道行者、天地行者、宇宙行者来说,信、愿、行三,同样缺一不可。
For
practitioners of True Dharma, practitioners of the Great Way, practitioners of the
heaven and earth, practitioners of the universe, none of three points such as
belief, vow and practice is dispensable.
有了真信切愿,接下来就是行愿。
The
next step is practicing the vows when one has the true belief and earnest resolve.
白话说就是把你的大愿付诸行动,践行你的大愿!
Colloquially,
to put your vows into practice, and to implement your great vows dedicatedly!
断一切恶,勇猛精进!
Cut
off all evils, and practice courageously and diligently!
修一切善,勇猛精进!
Practice
all virtues, cultivate courageously and diligently!
清净三业,勇猛精进!
Purify
the body, speech and mind, practice courageously and diligently!
至心念佛,勇猛精进!
Pray
to the Buddha with sincere heart and practice courageously and diligently!
深入经藏,勇猛精进!
Concentrate
on sutras studying and practice courageously and diligently!
勤持楞严,勇猛精进!
Hold
Shurangama Mantra and practice courageously and diligently!
持咒诵经,勇猛精进!
Recite
mantras, chant sutras and practice courageously and diligently!
常行六度,勇猛精进!
Practice
the Six Perfections often and practice courageously and diligently!
修心修行,勇猛精进!
Cultivate
the mind, and practice courageously and diligently!
修炼提升,勇猛精进!
Discipline
the mind for ascension, and practice courageously and diligently!
造福苍生,勇猛精进!
Bring
bliss to all under heaven, and practice courageously and diligently!
普济亿灵,勇猛精进!
Rescue
millions of beings, and practice courageously and diligently!
勤除习气,勇猛精进!
Eliminate
bad habits, and practice courageously and diligently!
戒定慧学,勇猛精进!
Cultivate
precepts, concentration and wisdom, and practice courageously and diligently!
效法释迦,勇猛精进!
Follow
the example of Shakyamuni Buddha and practice courageously and diligently!
自利利他,勇猛精进!
Benefit
self and others, and practice courageously and diligently!
自度度他,勇猛精进!
Instruct
self and others, and practice courageously
and diligently!
自觉觉他,勇猛精进!
Enlighten
self and others, and practice courageously and diligently!
行菩萨道,勇猛精进!
Follow
the Mahayana Way of bodhisattvas, and practice courageously and diligently!
劝人断恶,勇猛精进!
Persuade
people to cut off all evils, and practice courageously and diligently!
劝人向善,勇猛精进!
Persuade
people to tune mind for kindness, and practice courageously and diligently!
导人向佛,勇猛精进!
Guide
people to tune the mind to restore the inner Buddha-nature, and practice
courageously and diligently!
接引回归,勇猛精进!
Receive
and guide beings to return to the source, and practice courageously and
diligently!
模范德行,勇猛精进!
To
be a model of virtuous behaviors, and practice courageously and diligently!
遵纪守法,勇猛精进!
To
observe disciplines and obey laws, and practice courageously and diligently!
爱国爱民,勇猛精进!
To
love the country and countrymen, and practice courageously and diligently!
科学顺道,勇猛精进!
To
perform according to the Way scientifically, and practice courageously and
diligently!
无我奉献,勇猛精进!
To
dedicate with non-self , and practice courageously and diligently!
无为喜舍,勇猛精进!
To
give joyfully and unconditionally, and practice courageously and diligently!
慈悲光爱,勇猛精进!
To
bring light and love with compassion, and practice courageously and diligently!

真信、切愿、实行者,必得成就!
The
person who has true belief, earnest resolve and actual practice is sure to succeed!
真信切愿实行证,
以身演道化堪忍。
度己度人步莫停,
借假修真塑金身。
With true belief, earnest resolve, actual practice and
realization, one demonstrates the Way with one’s own conducts to transform
those in confusion.
Never stop saving self and others, and cultivate
the true-self by the aid of the false one (physical body) in order to mould the
golden body.
就以此偈《塑金身》作为今日法会的结语吧!
Let's
use this verse Mould the Golden Body to conclude today’s assembly.
