September 14th, 2011
Getting up before 6:00am to practice your cultivation diligently, and it
seems that each of you have done it step by step. Very good!
Seeing each of you works against time to practice diligently, Osifu is
very pleased, very satisfied and very happy.
What Osifu mostly expects is that all of you return to the source
successfully.
Only with strong and firm minds as well as diligent practices can ensure
you a complete and success returning.
Slackness will only harm you.
Osifu’s teachings will be given every other day beginning at 7:00 and ending
at 8:00 in each morning.
You may practice on yourself before 7:00 but get online to synchronize
with the energy and messages as well as the codes.
No matter what you do in this world, spirits of great ambition, great
efforts and fearlessness are necessary.
During the process of mind discipline, cultivation and practice, you will
encounter various obstacles and tribulations, any hesitation or even the
slightest slackness will make you accomplishing nothing.
Diligent cultivation and practices is the key to vanquish the demons and
evils.
Slackness means not working hard for cultivation, and not trying the best
to cut off conducting evil deeds and nurturing good deeds. It also means the fatigue
of the body and laziness of the mind. Slackness is the illness of life and the
prescription for it is to practice diligently.
The subject of diligent practice is to nurture kindness that hasn’t
intrigued yet and to enable the intrigued kindness growing up; while to
eradicate tevil that hasn’t been aroused yet and cut off the evil that has been
awakened.
It is a world with both Buddhas and demons. Those who practices hard and
diligently will become Buddhas while those who slacks off will sink into the
devildom. Let’s learn about the story of the Venerable Analv.
The Venerable Analv once was dozing off at the dharma assembly of the Lord
Buddha
Lord Buddha was not fond of those disciples who were lazy and not work
hard. He woke up Analv and scolded him saying:
‘咄咄汝好睡,螺蛳蚌壳内;
Those who snooze will be transmigrating into the snails and shells for a
thousand years without hearing the name of a Buddha.
Hearing the scolds from Buddha, the Venerable Analv, felt ashamed and
determined never sleep again, and since then he chanted sutra or practiced walking
recitation everyday
It won’t be a matter if not sleep in one or two days, but without
sleeping every day, no one can bear that, also it would be too much for the eyes.
After a period of time, Analv still worked hard sleepless and his eyes was
finally got blinded.
Lord Buddha was very pitiful for Analv and taught him to cultivate Vajra
Lighting Samadhi,soon
Analv attained spiritual eyes penetration.
Analv practiced so hard just because of the words from Buddha. After
going through a tiring dearth as Analv, one would not be tempted by lust and
slackness or disturbed by evils and demons.
Buddhism practitioners listen to the Sutra or Dharma in order to get
known of the Truth, which means to gain the Great Wisdom of Manjusri, but we
have to work hard and diligently on the inner wisdom that we have gained in
order to fit the Great Practice of Samantabhadra.
People would not bring forth vigorous mind to cultivate the Way if they greedily
admire for leisure and ease and paid particular attention to enjoyment. During
his cultivation on the causal ground in the past, Buddha sacrificed his body to
feed a tiger and cut his flesh to feed an eagle, the unaffordable and
unbearable spirits for sacrifice is incredibly difficult for the ordinary
people.
Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, ‘Her 32 manifestations appear in limitless
lands and she has been transforming the living beings of Jambudvipa for tens of
thousands of kalpas. She gives responses wherever there is somebody calling
upon her name for help and often works as a salvation ferryboat in the sea of
suffering.’ If it was not the spirit of diligence, how could she make it?
Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva—‘never achieves the Buddhahood if not empty the
Hell and will only fulfill the Proper Bodhi Fruition when all the sentient
beings achieve their enlightenment’.
All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are our examples for cultivation.
Master Husan Chuang went to the West for pilgrimage passing eight hundred
miles of quicksand, he almost died of severe dehydration in the desert, but he
would rather die in the Western land than get back to the Eastern land with
empty hands. How could he get there if it were not his religious passion and
his diligence for teachings?
When Master Huike visited Patriarch Dharma, he broke his arm in the snow
without turning around his Bodhi Mind, and how could he do that if it were not
his determination for pursuing Dharma?
The Six Perfections is based mainly on diligence. Regardless of donation,
precepts, forbearance, meditation Samadhi and wisdom, the Paramita cannot be
completed if without diligence.
There are ten kinds of benefits for diligence: first, never be knocked
down by other forces; second, gain blessings from Buddhas; third, gain revere
from humans and the celestial beings; forth, never forget the learned Proper
Dharma; fifth, the unknown can attain the knowledge they seeking for; sixth,
affect the growth of eloquence; seventh, to attain the meditation Samadhi;
eighth, with less disease, less annoyance and less risks; ninth, with easy diet
digestion; tenth, to bloom as Epiphyllum.
Diligence is like getting fire by rubbing sticks which cannot be stopped
half-way; it is easy to cultivate Bodhicitta but keep at it is another story.
No matter whatever you do, you will receive no benefits if without perseverance,
diligence or stop half-way.
Often hear it says ‘heating every five minutes’
How can we make success without perseverance and diligence by doing things
in manner of heating every five minutes?
To keep the diligence everlasting, we have to gain the spirits of Mr.
Kongming---spare no efforts in the performance of one’s duty till the end of
one’s day, and the spirit of ‘no pains, no gains’
Otherwise,the
mind for quick success or the desirability for short term profits will make you
set back if you don’t reach your goal or discourage you once you encounter
obstacles.
Those who leave a job incomplete are the ones without indomitable spirit
of diligence.
Learn another Buddhist story about diligence.
A parrot, seeing a mountain forest gets fire burning, which is very
fierce. It felt sorry for it and immediately flew to the river to mouth water
to save the fire. Such extinguishment method is worse than ‘utterly inadequate
amount (literally, a cup of water cannot put out the fire on a carload of wood)’
method, which is certainly useless. But the parrot was still work vigorously
and diligently to quench the fire.
At this time, the Vulcan in the Heaven knew it and said to the parrot:
“parrot, the fire is so strong, how can you put out it by taking so little
water with your mouth, wasn’t it useless?”
The parrot answered: “fire-fighting is a responsibility for everybody, and
I know that my strength is small, but I have to try my best to do it”. The
parrot’s words are ordinary but the ambition of the parrot is extraordinary.
And the diligence and valor of never retreating at difficulties actually moved
the Vulcan to extinguish the fire on the mountain.
There are six sections says in the Sutra in Forty-Two Sections that how
people should work diligently in cultivation of the Way. There are three types
of diligence: first,armored
diligence; second, diligence of intake effective ways; third, diligence of
benefitting the living beings.
The so-called armored diligence, Sutra in Forty-Two Sections says people
who cultivate the Way are like a soldier who goes into battle alone against ten
thousand enemies. He dons armor and goes out the queue. He may retreat halfway
or be killed in combat if he was a coward; or he can fight to live in the
danger of death and obtain the fruition of the Way by defeating the hordes of
demons if he could be vigorous, courageous, valiant and defying what lies
ahead. The armored diligence means that one must have fighting spirit in his cultivation.
The armored diligence is to cut off evil but it still need to complete
the good deeds, which is the diligence of intake good deeds. It means no matter
a monk or a laymen Buddhist, to attend good deeds should not be too hasty or
too slow, and all should be met in the mid-way as it would be retreated by
over-reaction because of anxiety, while it would be retreated by idleness
because of slowness.
It also likes playing musical instruments. Loose strings will not make
sound and tight strings will cut the sound off. So don’t be too slow or too
quick for goodness practice as both will make it out of order. The Dharma is
justified in the middle way.
As for the diligence of benefiting the living beings, it is to say that
the Buddhism practitioners should be merciful to save and enlighten the living
beings. But there are infinite beings in the Three Realms, and how could we
practice the ambition of saving and enlightening beings if without working
diligently? With endless compassion and tremendous ambition can make people not
retreat but work diligently.
During the process of practicing, it is easy for people to make mistakes
such as tiring bodies and minds indulgence, and the problem is that we haven’t
got known of the value of time and life.
We live in the time, in which we keep thinking there will be always
tomorrow, always next years and always lot of time left. So we idle away our
life and failed under the habits of slackness and dependence.
If we understand the importance and value of the time, and keep the
impermanence in mind, we will not stop for a second, never be hesitant but be
sincere to cultivate the Way.
In the past, Lord Buddha asked his disciples: ‘How long is the human life?’
‘Few days!’ disciple A answered
‘You have not yet understood the Way!’ the Buddha did not approve it and
asked again:
‘How long is the human life?’
‘The space of a meal!’ disciple B answered
‘You have not yet understood the Way!’ the Buddha still did not approve
it and asked again:
‘How long is the human life?’
‘The length of a single breath!’ answered disciple C.
The human lifespan could be a single breath long! Upon hearing this The
Load Buddha was very pleased and praised:‘Excellent!
You have understood the Way!’
When we realize that human lifespan could be a single breath long, and
how dare we be slacking off in cultivation and practicing the good deeds? How could
we not hurry up to complete the cultivation while in practicing the Way and the
good deeds?
Diligence means pureness and never retreat. The purpose of diligence is
to break through the afflictions and vanquish the four demons as well as escape
from the prison of the five skandhas.
‘There is nothing everlasting but endless troubles are always there.’ The
inherent ignorance and troubles entrenched in our minds, so that we cannot
transcend and gain release from birth and death.
The biggest issue in Buddhism practice is to break through the afflictions.
Affliction is something worries your body and mind, and worse than thieves,
robbers and bandits. As the saying goes: it is easy to capture the thieves in mountains
but difficult to capture the thieves in one’s mind.
The anxiety and suffering of life all brought about by afflictions.
The so-called eighty-four thousand Dharma Doors is nothing than to treat
and cure the eighty-four thousand afflictions.
Asubha-bhavana is used to cure the greediness while compassion is used to
cure hatred. Wisdom is used to cure stupidity while non-egoism is used to cure
arrogance. Rational belief is used to cure suspicion while rational insight is
used to cure evil insight.
To sum up those afflictions or evils of worries, they are six kinds of
fundamental ones, namely, they are greediness, hatred, ignorance, arrogance,
suspicion and evil insight, in addition to the six fundamental ones, there are
also twenty sub- afflictions.
The fundamental afflictions are the roots of all the afflictions same as the roots of trees. The twenty sub-afflictions are divided into ten minor sub- afflictions, two major sub-afflictions and eight chief sub- afflictions.
The ten minor sub-afflictions are anger, enmity, vexation, hypocrisy, dishonesty,
deceit, arrogance, harmfulness, jealousy and selfishness.
The two major sub-afflictions are shamelessness and impudence.
The eight chief sub-afflictions
are doubt, slackness,carelessness,
indolence, recklessness forgetfulness, false insight and distracted mind.
The ignorant afflictions obscure our bright true minds so that we don’t
understand our true nature. We live in dangers and fears because we are
disturbed by the afflictions.
Egocentrism is the commander of all afflictions and all the afflictions
intrigued because of the egocentrism that the living beings hold. ‘Free from
egocentrism before practicing the Dharma’. The state of non-egocentrism is a state
free from afflictions.
Egocentrism is the fundamental of afflictions of birth and death. Be free
from egocentrism, how difficult it is! Without removing the egocentrism, one
can never get rid of the troubles.
Methods of removing the afflictions: starting with the cultivation of
precepts, Samadhi and wisdom three undefiled studying, coupled with Buddha
recitation, chatting sutra, meditation and a series of cultivation methods, one
will gradually gets rid of the troubles and the true nature will appear itself.
The troubles are removed but we also need to vanquish the evils. Evil is
something that can ruin the good deeds and cut off the wisdom body of the
living beings.
Those obstacles, disruption, sabotage, temptation or anything threaten
life are called evil. There are outer evils of reputation, profit and etc; and
there are inner evils of greediness, hatred and worries. One cannot practice
the Way without the spirit of vanquishing the evils.
Evil is hiding everywhere in the world and the worst evil is hiding in
our minds. The Skanda Bodhisattva in temple holding a Vajra pestle in hand
stands facing the interior of temple, from which we can see that it is more
important to subdue the inner evils than the outer evils.
Well, part of today’s teachings is excerpted from Master Hsing Yun. Osifu
thinks that it was really good and save my typing time.
The Skanda Bodhisattva in temple holding a Vajra pestle in hand stands
facing the interior of temple, from which we can see that it is more important
to yield the inner evils than the outer evils.
Such statement is very interesting.
Buddhism is growing declined, while too few people who continue to plant
the seeds and prolong the wisdom of the Buddha, while the followers of demons who
wear Buddhist clothes, eat offering meals, and conduct dirty business in the
name of believing in Buddhism, are too many.
To be the real sons and daughters of the Buddha, we have to harbor the
spirit of challenging the evils!
During the Dharma-declining age, which is a long way from the Sages time;while the priest climbs a post, the devil climbs
ten. Hope all the Buddhists with true faith in Buddha should keep in line with
the Skanda Bodhisattva holding Vajra pestles subduing all the devils that
obstruct the Way.
‘Subduing four kinds of evils,’ the four kinds of evils are as follows,
firstly the trouble, which refers to bad habits such as greediness, anger and
ignorance that harm the physical bodies and minds. Secondly the Five Senses,
which refers to the Five Skandhas such as form, feeling, cognition, formation
and consciousness that brings about all sufferings. Third the death, which
refers to evils deprives of the existences of people. Fourth the heavenly demon,
it refers to the heavenly demons and externalists who ruin the good deeds of
people, for instance, the mara-king of Ishvaradeva in the Realm of Desire.
People can obtain release from the birth and death reincarnation and
escape from the prison of the Five Shandhas in the Three Realms when the
troubles that cause offenses were broken down, and the demon kings who disturb
the Way were subdued
The Five Senses refers to the physical bodies of living beings that were
composed of the Five Skandhas. The sense means to be buried by something, and
the true Buddha nature of the living being was buried by form, feeling,
cognition, formation and consciousness. The Three Realms refers to the Realm of
Desire, the Realm of Form and the Formless Realm.
The Five Senses gather sufferings together while the Three Realms are
like a fiery residence. The physical bodies and the mundane land are
impermanent and unreal which is equivalent to an unreliable prison. To escape
from the prison of Five Senses we have to break through the evil troubles and
subdue the four kinds of demons.
If the living beings cultivate diligently without slacking off, abandon
the Five Senses bodies, get out of the prison of the Three Realms, obtain
permanent Dharma body and complete ease, then they will live in a bright, free
and peaceful world!
真好
It is really nice!
Let’s conclude the studies here.
The contents are quite a lot; apply your minds to contemplate them carefully.
The theme of today’s teachings is only one, that is diligence!
Keep in mind: practice diligently!
